Affect Across the Wake-Sleep Cycle

چکیده
Abstract Affective scientists traditionally have focused on periods of active wakefulness when people are responding to external stimuli or engaging in specific tasks. However, we live much our lives immersed experiences not related the current environment tasks at hand—mind-wandering (or daydreaming) during and dreaming sleep. Despite being disconnected from immediate environment, brains still generate affect such periods. Yet, research stimulus-independent has remained largely separate affective science. Here, suggest that one key future direction for science will be expand field view by integrating wealth findings mind-wandering, sleep, provide a more comprehensive account across wake-sleep cycle. In developing argument, address two issues: variation cycle, benefits expanding study full considering these issues, highlight methodological clinical implications

Ultrastructural evidence for synaptic scaling across the wake/sleep cycle.
It is assumed that synaptic strengthening and weakening balance throughout learning to avoid runaway potentiation and memory interference. However, energetic and informational considerations suggest that potentiation should occur primarily during wake, when animals learn, and depression should occur during sleep. We measured 6920 synapses in mouse motor and sensory cortices using three-dimensio...
متن کاملSynaptic Homeostasis and Restructuring across the Sleep-Wake Cycle
Sleep is critical for hippocampus-dependent memory consolidation. However, the underlying mechanisms of synaptic plasticity are poorly understood. The central controversy is on whether long-term potentiation (LTP) takes a role during sleep and which would be its specific effect on memory. To address this question, we used immunohistochemistry to measure phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-depend...
متن کاملSpike Avalanches Exhibit Universal Dynamics across the Sleep-Wake Cycle
BACKGROUND Scale-invariant neuronal avalanches have been observed in cell cultures and slices as well as anesthetized and awake brains, suggesting that the brain operates near criticality, i.e. within a narrow margin between avalanche propagation and extinction. In theory, criticality provides many desirable features for the behaving brain, optimizing computational capabilities, information tra...
متن کامل[Sleep-wake cycle mechanisms].
Neurochemically distinct systems interact regulating sleep and wakefulness. Wakefulness is promoted by aminergic, acetylcholinergic brainstem and hypothalamic systems. Each of these arousal systems supports wakefulness and coordinated activity is required for alertness and EEG activation. Neurons in the pons and preoptic area control rapid eye movement and non-rapid eye movement sleep. Mutual i...
متن کاملCognitive flexibility across the sleep-wake cycle: REM-sleep enhancement of anagram problem solving.
Flexible or 'fluid' cognitive processes are regarded as fundamental to problem solving and creative ability, requiring a specific neurophysiological milieu. REM-sleep dreaming is associated with creative processes and abstract reasoning with increased strength of weak associations in cognitive networks. REM sleep is also mediated by a distinctive neurophysiological profile, different to that of...
